I've always been wondering

Answer
Usually your Television has a "zoom" feature to remove black bars if they bother you.

Remember that Movies are shot in dozens of screen ratios. The movie theater used to have those red-velvet curtains that would move in/out/down to frame the image so you did not notice the black bars.

BluRay players are trying to give you the exact movie image so .. you see the bars on a 16:9 television.

If you watch a HDTV show on BluRay - then it exactly fills the screen.

Adjusting DVD Playback without black bars?

I am viewing Blu Ray movies on my 32" LG 720p Widescreen HDTV. My Blu Ray player is a PS3 plugged in with an HDMI cable. I was wondering how to configure my TV and player so that movies take up the entire area of the screen (aside from using that zoom feature)?

Answer
not all Blu-Ray movies are true 16X9.
it's going to depend on the director, but a lot of movies are shot in wider than widescreen so those black bars are normal.

example apocalypto is 1.85:1 or 16.65X9 wider than widescreen
