Blu ray player quality is bad?

John S.

So i bought an LG blu ray player and the first day i rented a blu ray dvd and the picture did not seem so clear a bit grainy, so i thought it was the movie perhaps, i let it go. Today about 2 weeks later i put in the movie Troy thinking it was going to upscale the dvd (Troy is a regular dvd not blu ray cd) and it did not upscale anything. As a matter fact it looked far worse than playing in a regular dvd player.
i compared this by playing troy in my laptop and then playing it on my blu ray.

What could be the issue here? is the blu ray player faulty? should i return it? I am using HDMI and my tv is an LG as well 42 inch LCD

Answer
First - stick to BluRay for testing. The up-conversion is ... not all that it is cracked up to be.

Second - BluRay had a lot of complaints because of the film-grain that shows up on a lot of BluRay movies. This is deliberate because movies shot on film or for the theater often has film grain and the picture is faithful to the movie theater experience.

You may also need to adjust the brightness/contrast/color. Get a modern Pixar movie (Cars, Rattilloui, WallE) on bluRay and go to the disk setup menu. It will have simple test-patterns and instructions on how to adjust brightness, contrast, color. Then watch the cartoon. High quality animation like the Pixar movies should look fantastic on a HD display.

Hope this helps.

why did they put bd live on sony bdp S350 blu ray player?

i bought a sony bdp s350 blu ray player i had problems
with bd live i needed firmware update, the unit shutdown.
waiting for firmware to arrive in mail from sony. yesterday i was in radio shack i was looking at the blu ray unit
sylvania it was on sale for 139.00 they had a break in so
he sold it to me for 119.00 he also threw in a monster
cable which cost 99.00 i also got for free. the player
is awesome picture quality is great! dont buy the sony
bdp S350 only if you like problems and being fustrated
i wish i would have known the fact that any blu ray player
other than one with bd live will work. the hype swayed
me into buying the sony, also another thing i noticed
when the sony model came out there were a lot
of returns at fry's and circuit city.maybe the player's had shut
down and they didn't know about the bd live issues
knowledge is power!!!

Answer
Sorry, but the Sony player is better. Requiring a firmware update doesn't mean the player sucks any more than requiring gas means your car is no good. All you're doing is updating the software to improve your movie experience. All you need to upload firmware is a USB storage device or a DVD burner. So, with about 10 minutes of effort and a little bit of competence your Sony would have been 2.0 compliant. Not that it matters that much. I have yet to find anything interesting in the BD Live feature.

You got a good deal on that Sylvania. I still say you'll regret buying it, but you can't beat $119 for a Blu-ray player. The Monster cable isn't worth any more than $10, but it's a nice addition.
