What are the hottest new gaming consoles nowadays?

I'm 28 and literally haven't been in the gaming world for about 15 years. I would like to start playing games again. What kind of consoles are out there currently, including handhelds?

Furthermore, I use to love RPG's like the Final Fantasy series, Secret of Mana, Earthbound, etc. What is good for RPG's currently? (*not* looking for multiplayer online games like World of Warcraft, but I would still be interested in PC titles)

Gaming Platforms: PC, Xbox 360, PS3

PC:

Pros: Comes with better visuals in most games, and future-proof with hardware. Extremely large selection of gaming gear (headphones, keyboards, mouses). High customizability: modifications and add-ons can be downloaded for many games, for free. Access to many other things unrelated to games, large online communities in many different sites and systems. Many, many exclusives (RTS games, Minecraft, numerous indie games).

Cons: High-performance computers expensive, custom computers require computer-building skills.


Xbox 360:

Pros: Grizzled community, large selection of exclusive games (Gears of War, Halo), trustworthy online service, with many features. Cheap to buy. Simple to start up and use. Comfortable controller.

Cons: Pay to use online service, expensive in the long-run. New one coming out in the next years. Not future proof. (Xbox 720)


PS3: Relatively new community, large selection of great exclusive games (Resistance, Little Big Planet), good free online service, with good features. Cheap to buy. Simple to start up and use. Comfortable controller. Slightly more powerful hardware than Xbox 360. Doubles as a Blu-Ray disc player, and games can have more data stored onto it.
