I tried a Netgear router but it is too far, streaming videos wont work. My modem has only one port for ethernet. If I use a splitter at the modem, run a physical cable wire to the dvd player, will this solve my distance problem and avoid the need for a router?

Answer
Do not use a splitter - you will have problems all the time with video quality.
As the first answer states, the powerline adapters work pretty well. I would however, recommend something different, that would give you the best result.
Buy your self a gigabit router (it does not matter if it is G or N or Dualband), just make sure that it is a gigabit router. The gigabit portion of the router will allow you to get the fastest speed from hard wiring your blu-ray player (physical cable ran from router to blu-ray). This is simple to setup, run ethernet cable from modem to router, then you will have an ethernet cable ran from router to your computer and another one ran to your blu-ray. This option will allow you to get the best connection possible for your setup. Keep in mind, to get best results for Netflix streaming, you will want to have 6mp internet speed or faster.

Hope this helps!
