Is there a way to improve the quality of streaming video with netflix and a blu-ray player?

I've noticed that when I instant queue movies to my blu-ray player the movies are pretty poor sub-SD quality. It seems though it sacrifices quality for load time. Is there a way to improve this, even meaning longer loads?

Your Blu-Ray player is meant to be used with Blu-Ray Discs. If you are attempting to play regular DVD or streaming video downloaded from the Internet, you will not get a Blu-Ray quality. This is the new wave of technology that doesn't play well with old analog or even digital that is not blu-ray enhanced.

They are from the Olympus Stylus Tough 8000 underwater and out of the water camera and i have burned them to a DVD-R disc through my computer and am looking to watch on tv on our Sony Blu-Ray player. I have tried loading the disc but it displays a message saying that the disc format cannot be played. What do I do? Do I have to buy a different disc or use a program to specially format the disc for dvd use?
