XBOX-3 dual-threaded cores
PS3- 7 single-threaded cores (plus 1 backup core)
So the CPU chips in both consoles run at the same GHz speed, but the PS3's 7 single-threaded cores beat the XBOX's 3 dual-threaded cores, so if you mearure the performance in gigaflops, the PS3 is nearly 3 times that of the XBOX. In theory, the CPU/GPU chip used in the new XBOX 360 is faster than the individual chips used in older models of the console but to ensure proper funtionality, Microsoft had to install a frontside bus replacement block so the CPU/GPU chip in newer consoles actually runs at the same speed as chips in the older model. This new combined chip in newer XBOX models is slightly better than the chip in a PS3 in terms of reliability and temperature control.

I would suggest to follow your son for buying the Xbox 360 because it is the best console ever made for gaming and he would love playing the most popular game n Xbox. right now is Halo reach. But if he likes watching blu-ray movies and playing online for free I would suggest the PS3.
