Does Netflix have high definition streaming 1080p on blu-ray players?

Michael

my blu-ray player is Model number: BDP-S370

Answer
There is more to Blu-Ray then just 1080p which just describes the amount of pixels or resolution.

Blu-Ray sizes are usually at least 20 gigabytes and go much bigger up to 40 gigabytes. Happy Feet is 13 gigabytes though which is very small.

Even if you could download at 200 kb/s, it would take 1.16 days to download or 27.84 hours. That's just for 20 gigabytes which is on the smaller end.

DVDs are around 7-8 gigabytes. Even if you wanted to download a whole entire 7 gigabyte DVD file at 200 kb/s it would take .41 days or 10.08 hours.

The fact is, Blu-Ray is uncompressed audio and video while DVD is compressed. It's more than just 1080p.

One reason why I don't use netflix streaming is because it's going to be decently worse than DVD quality.

I'm positive how Netflix streaming works, but in some cases if there is a Blu-Ray version available for the movie they may convert that in to a MPEG or AVI file which in turn is sent to your Blu-Ray player. They have to convert a Blu-Ray or DVD in to a video file that is able to be sent to your computer.

Bare in mind your connection determines the quality. If you're capable of downlading like 4 megabytes a second you may get some really great quality feed.

What are some of the better Blu Ray players that stream Netflix?

Unfortunately, I currently have the super slow bd-p 1500 blu ray player and I am thinking of upgrading to get Netflix streaming. Thanks!

Answer
At the moment your choices are still somewhat limited, but that will be changing soon. If you want something _right_now_ you'll still be looking at the new Samsung models that load considerably faster. The BDP 1600, which replaced the 1500 model, or there is always a higher up/more expensive Samsung you could get. Or you could go with an LG. I think the Samsung would be a better choice. You could find a 1600 on Ebay for about $185. Walmart sells (online) the model 1590 which is basically a 1600 with a slightly different face to it and sells for $50 less than the 1600 in the stores. They sell for about the same in Ebay.
However, Sony just announced that they will start selling next month a new player that will stream Netflix once they have a firmware upgrade ready later this fall. ($250) No reviews yet on that model as it has just barely been announced. It will probably be similar to their 360 model or perhaps a bit better.
