My birthday is soon and I wanted to know should I ask for a 250gb xbox 360 slim? I never used one before. I would have hdmi hooked up to hdtv. The things I would do mostly is netflix gta iv movies and overall random games. How is netflix? If its bad then w/e I have a wii for that.

Answer
If you are not in it for hardcore multiplayer gaming, then I would opt for a PS3 instead. PS3 has free access to Sony's online world. There is Netflix for PS3 as well, and it has always worked wonderfully for me. GTA IV is also available on PS3, and movie watching experience is much better because PS3 has a blu-ray player (which can play DVDs as well). So even if you don't have blu ray or are not interested in it now, you might be in the future. If you are hooked up to an HDTV, then blu ray is definitely the better choice for movie watching experience. So, because of the things you listed that you would use it for, I really do believe a PS3 would be your best choice mainly for the potential to watch blu-rays as well as the free internet access.

What are all of the PROS and CONS for the XBOX 360 and the Ps3?

Answer
XBOX Pros

Better quality online game play
Access to streaming- ESPN in USA and Sky in UK
Windows Media Centre
Higher disc read speed on single layer discs
Backwards compatibility covers more of the games than PS3(slim)

Cons

Lacks the Cell chip which PS3 has, so in long term PS3 is in better position for more advanced games.
Red Ring Of Death
No Blu ray player
Older models don't have built in WiFi
Batteries for wireless controllers

PS3 Pros

Blu ray player
Free online gaming
Fully funtional web browser
No batteries needed for wireless controller
All models have built in WiFi
Larger hardrive

Cons

Online gaming is less reliable than XBOX Live
Updates have to be installed for each new game
Yellow light of death

The following weighs up the technical aspects of both consoles:

CPU
XBOX-3.2GHz Xenon Processor
PS3- 3.2GHz Cell Processor

XBOX-3 dual-threaded cores
PS3- 7 single-threaded cores (plus 1 backup core)

So the CPU chips in both consoles run at the same GHz speed, but the PS3's 7 single-threaded cores beat the XBOX's 3 dual-threaded cores, so if you mearure the performance in gigaflops, the PS3 is nearly 3 times that of the XBOX. In theory, the CPU/GPU chip used in the new XBOX 360 is faster than the individual chips used in older models of the console but to ensure proper funtionality, Microsoft had to install a frontside bus replacement block so the CPU/GPU chip in newer consoles actually runs at the same speed as chips in the older model. This new combined chip in newer XBOX models is slightly better than the chip in a PS3 in terms of reliability and temperature control.

GPU
XBOX-ATI Xenos NVIDIA
PS3 -RSX "Reality Synthesizer"

XBOX-Up to 512 MB GDDR3 RAM (shared w/ system RAM)
PS3 -256 MB GDDR 3RAM (additional 224 MB can be shared w/ system RAM)

XBOX-21.6 GBps bandwidth (256 GBps via eDRAM)
PS3 -22.4 GBps bandwidth

The XBOX Xenos graphics card has more video RAM than PS3 but this video RAM is shared with the consoles system RAM. The PS3 has 256MB of RAM dedicated to video and can also share up to 224MB of RAM from the system RAM if it needs to do so. The PS3 has slightly better bandwidth but the XBOX has the advantage of 10MB of eDRAM which means the XBOX system bandwidth jumps to 256GBps. So, the PS3 show better general performance but the XBOX with its 10MB of eDRAM gives better peak performance.

RAM
XBOX-512 MB GDDR3 RAM (shared with GPU)
PS3 -256 MB XDR RAM

XBOX-700 MHz speed
PS3 -3.2 GHz speed

XBOX-22.4 Gbps bandwidth
PS3 -25.6 Gbps bandwidth

The XBOX total RAM is misleading because system RAM and video RAM are shared. The PS3's XDR RAM is faster and more efficient than XBOX's GDDR3 RAM. The PS3's runs at 3.2GHz compared to XBOX's 700MHz.

Hard Drive
XBOX-250 GB HDD or 4 GB SSD
PS3 -160 or 320 GB HDD

XBOX-5400 rpm
PS3 -5400 rpm

XBOX-User replaceable w/ proprietary HDD
PS3 -User replaceable w/ standard HDD

The HDD units in both consoles are very similar, both run at 5400rpm and have several hundred GB of storage. High end PS3 models have 320 GB HDD compared to XBOX 250 GB. The advantage of the PS3 is its support of standard 2.5" SATA notebook hard drives which means the PS3 hard drive can be upgraded with drives that have higher capacities and rpm speeds but XBOX only supports Microsofts proprietary HDD model.

Disc Drive
XBOX-12x read speed (DVD) 8x read speed (DVD)
PS3 -2x read speed (Blu-ray)

XBOX-7 GB disc space
PS3 -25 GB disc space

The XBOX has higher DVD disc read speed than PS3. If you compare XBOX DVD read speed to PS3 Blu ray disc read speed XBOX maxes out at 15.85 MBps on a single layer disc and the PS3's maximum is 9 MBps. But the XBOX's speed is reduced when reading dual layer discs. The PS3 disc drive runs slower than the XBOX but the PS3 does have higher storage capacity due to blu ray.

In my opinion the PS3 is superior, apart from online gaming.
